Barcelona could face a significant sanction from UEFA following the incidents that occurred last night in the lead up to the match between Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid.
The issue concerns objects being thrown at the Atlético de Madrid team bus as it arrived at Spotify Camp Nou. A similar incident had already taken place earlier this season during a Copa del Rey clash.
The attack happened on the road leading up to the stadium, where a barrage of objects caused material damage, specifically to two windows on the driver’s side of the bus. Fortunately, there were no injuries among the visiting delegation.
UEFA regulations leave little room for interpretation. Article 16, which covers “Order and Security at UEFA Competition Matches,” clearly states that host clubs and national associations are responsible for maintaining order and safety both inside and around the stadium before, during, and after matches.
It specifies that all federations and clubs must comply with UEFA’s Safety and Security Regulations, and that they are accountable for any incidents unless they can prove there was no negligence in the organization of the match.
The final decision now rests with UEFA’s disciplinary body, but all indications suggest that Barcelona is likely to face a financial penalty.
