Andreas Christensen, 30, still does not know where he will play next season. The Danish center back is in the final stages of recovery from a partial ACL tear in his left knee, an injury that has sidelined him since just before Christmas. His contract with FC Barcelona expires on June 30.
Although Christensen has been free to negotiate with any club since January, his priority has always been to remain at Barcelona, and he made that clear to the club’s hierarchy. Likewise, as a sign of appreciation for proving himself to be a committed team player, Barcelona had been willing to offer him a renewal deal, but with a salary well below what he is currently earning. Given that he joined on a free transfer from Chelsea FC in June 2022, his wages were relatively high because they included a signing bonus.
In addition, considering his recent injury history, Barcelona initially offered him a one year contract with an option for a second season if certain performance clauses were met. After months of negotiations between both parties, the club submitted its proposal, which Christensen has rejected.
The defender has attracted interest from top level clubs in the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, and even two teams in LaLiga. However, despite Barcelona’s reduced offer, the Denmark international still hopes to remain tied to the Catalan club.
In fact, he has asked his agent to continue talks with Barcelona in an attempt to reach a minimum agreement acceptable to both sides. Christensen is highly valued by Hansi Flick for his quality, versatility, and experience, but Barcelona will only consider keeping him if he accepts terms far below his previous salary.
For now, no agreement has been reached, but Christensen plans to exhaust every option before leaving the club he joined in June 2022. He feels strongly connected to Barcelona, as does his family, and is happy living in the city.
The defender hopes to return for the final LaLiga matches before a summer in which he will be unable to play what would have been the third FIFA World Cup of his career, after Denmark was eliminated in the playoff round by the Czech Republic. Christensen played seven World Cup matches across 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2022 FIFA World Cup.
He also featured at UEFA Euro 2020, where Denmark reached the semifinals one month after he won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, and he also played at UEFA Euro 2024.
With Barcelona, Christensen has made 97 official appearances. This season, he featured regularly in the first half of the campaign, playing in 12 LaLiga matches, four Champions League games, and one Copa del Rey appearance, where he scored in Guadalajara in his last match before injury.
